A Bit of History
Located on the busy Rua de Santa Catarina, this chapel is a masterpiece of Portuguese tile art. Its exterior walls are completely covered in hand-painted blue tiles (azulejos) that depict religious scenes, making it one of the most photographed and tile-dense buildings in Porto.
Did You Know?
The front features exactly 15,947 tiles, making it one of the most photographed and tile-dense buildings in Porto. The tiles were originally used to tell Bible stories to people who could not read.
Local Tip
Go early in the morning or late at night when the shops are closed. The street is much quieter, and the blue tiles look incredible under the streetlights.
Be Aware!
Stay alert! Because everyone is looking up at the tiles and taking photos, this crowded pedestrian street is a prime spot for pickpockets.
