For popular or high-quality restaurants in Porto, booking in advance is essential, as many of the best spots will turn away people at the door. You should plan your schedule around the fact that locals typically eat dinner much later than in other countries, usually between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM. While some tourist-oriented places stay open all day, many traditional local eateries close their kitchens between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

Why It Matters

Porto is currently a very popular destination, and the most authentic or highly-rated restaurants fill up quickly. If you do not have a reservation, you may be forced to eat at "tourist trap" restaurants that stay open during off-hours specifically to cater to visitors, often serving lower-quality food at higher prices. Dining later allows you to experience the true local atmosphere, but it requires planning to ensure you actually secure a table.
