Porto Cathedral

Porto Cathedral

One of the oldest and most important landmarks in Porto

A Bit of History

Construction began in the 12th century, during the early formation of Portugal. Over time, the cathedral was expanded and modified, blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles.

The cathedral was originally built with strong defensive features, which is why it looks more like a fortress than a typical church.

Local Tip

Take time to explore the cloister as it’s often quieter than the main areas and gives a better sense of the cathedral’s history and architecture.
