Carmo Church

Carmo Church

An 18th-century Baroque church in central Porto

A Bit of History

The Church of Carmo was built in the 18th century in Baroque and Rococo style. Its iconic blue azulejo side wall was added in the 19th century and depicts religious scenes.

Did You Know?

Between the Church of Carmo and the Carmelite Church lies one of Porto’s narrowest houses, known as the “Hidden House,” built to separate the two churches originally belonging to different religious orders.

Local Tip

Go up to the terrace area of the church complex. It offers a great view, including a clear perspective of the Clérigos Tower.

Be Aware!

The surrounding area can get very busy with guided tours and groups, especially midday, which may make it harder to move comfortably around the site.
